Zenkoji Temple

Zenkoji Temple is one of Japan's most important and historic Buddhist temples, located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. It was originally built in the 7th century and has long been a center of pilgrimage and spiritual devotion. The temple is unique in that it is non-denominational, welcoming followers of all Buddhist sects and faiths.

At the heart of Zenkoji's significance is its principal object of worship, the Amida Triad Statue, believed to be the first Buddhist image brought to Japan. The original statue, however, is hidden and never displayed to the public. A replica, called the Maedachi Honzon, is shown during a special ceremony called Gokaicho, held every seven years.

One of the most famous features of Zenkoji is its underground passage called the "okaidan", where visitors walk in complete darkness in search of a key believed to grant salvation. This experience symbolizes enlightenment and connection to Amida Buddha.

The temple grounds are home to stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and important cultural relics, making Zenkoji a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists. Its historical significance and inclusive nature have made it a spiritual cornerstone of Japan for over a millennium.
